The trailer introduces us to Mahi (played by Nikita Dutta), a newly married woman who brings an antique Jewish box to her home. When Mahi and her husband Sam (played by Emraan Hashmi) start having paranormal experiences, they soon learn that the box is a diabbook with an evil spirit trapped inside.
When the soul becomes free, it starts wreaking havoc. The couple then enlists the help of a rabbi (played by Manav Kaul) to unravel its mystery and perform a spirit exorcism. The film appears to be structured around the traditional horror trope seen in many other films in the genre.
Inspired by Jewish mythology, we are yet to decide if the film will beat the stellar performances of Ezra and Prithviraj Sukumaran in the 2017 film.

Most of us are drawn to the discovery of ancient ruins, abandoned homes or someone else’s personal belongings. Call it our strange love for encroaching on someone else’s life but all these things give us a window into the past. Thus the act of people opening the archaic mystical boxes is always interesting. Add Jewish myths and the occult to the mix and we can have a thrilling thriller. Is this what happens here though?
Director Jay K has remade his first Malayalam film Ezra in Hindi as Diabbuk. Thankfully, women are not objectified here. No running around in thin lingerie or shower scenes. Big relief! The story moves smoothly and at a fast pace. The jump scares are few and far between and while it’s no magic, the effort is honest. Emraan Hashmi, Nikita Dutta and all their co-stars are good actors. nothing is trivial.

What doesn’t work is the film’s mundane energy and failing to evoke mystery at every step. Over-simplified storytelling inspires your desire to be discovered. Even the wandering soul has a strategy and it is absurd. You don’t feel as intimidated as you would like. The film itself seems quite happy about the Jewish novelty. Christian priests are replaced by rabbis, who must perform exorcism. The name of various Jewish words is dropped over and over again. We Are Spoon-fed Things Like This Is A Beginner’s Guide To Jewish Folklore. It is believed that no one would know much about the religion.
The special effects are decent. Only if there were some surprising elements to this mundane horror drama. It’s okay to cast out an evil spirit with a backstory but whether it can create fear is the question.
One of the most hurtful realizations when watching JK’s Dibbook is how often packers-and-movers appear in Emraan Hashmi’s horror films. If someone has seen enough of them, they will also see a pattern.
They are offered a new position in some distant foreign land, a large house that will soon become a metaphor for their empty marriage. There’s a weird looking help, which aims to build up the magnitude of the setting entirely. When he takes charge, he will encounter some weak resistance from his partner, and exchanges like this:
It is similar in dybbook. He has been offered a long-term project in Mauritius and the meeting is already full of boxes. We hear Mahi (Nikita Dutta) having second thoughts when Hashmi’s Sam comes up with the simplest ‘solution’ to ease her anxiety. “Let’s start a family, and everything else will sort out by itself!” She doesn’t protest. After all, what’s the point of a ‘horror’ film without foreshadowing the pregnant woman and the fetus?
